North Tukvar Tea Estate is a tea estate near Darjeeling town in India. It was one of the first commercial tea gardens to be established in the famous region of Darjeeling. This estate started operating in 1850s and used seeds raised in government nurseries. Following the experimental stage, commercial production started in 1856 and the estate grew rapidly.
It is a low Altitude garden ranging from 1500 ft.to 2800 ft facing North.It is situated in rain shadow area but the garden has 75 % area under sprinkler Irrigation. The garden is well connected with roads for better supervision and working convenience. The main road connects Darjeeling & Jorethang, from Darjeeling the garden is 16 Kms. & Jorethang which is one of the main town of Sikkim state is only 7 Kms. The garden (195.48 Hectare and production of 110 Tons of tea per year. Around 25% area of the garden under high quality clonal plantation), producing Orthodox Black Tea, produces early good first flush tea and fetches premium prices. The contribution of February & March crop is approx 20% of the total crop. Every year the quality of tea is improving.The garden has its own Nursery. It has also timber & bamboo forest. The garden has taken up massive developmental work such as Uprooting, Replanting & soil rehabilitation.
This 2013 spring tea produced from the AV2 and B157 cultivar young clonal bushes, it has nice silver tips and a mix of whole and broken young leaves, green grass to jade green colour. It has rich floral, fresh and sweet aroma. The brew is limpid and brilliant, golden colour (orange like, overstepped). Into the mouth has wonderful freshness (flowers followed by fruity notes) and slightly stringency at the end produced by tannins.
